The almost 400 hectare Windebyer Noor is an inland lake that was originally connected to the Baltic Sea. Eels, perch, vendace and zander live in the water, which is up to 13 meters deep. The Noorfischerei Mahrt supplies the restaurants in the area with freshly caught fish. Hobby anglers are also welcome.

The Windebyer Noor is a 389 hectare inland lake in Schleswig-Holstein. It is located on the western edge of the city of Eckernförde, to whose municipal area it belongs. To the south and west, the eponymous municipality of Windeby borders the shore of the lake.

The old town of Eckernförde now stands on the beach wall that has been washed up for thousands of years. The term Noor indicates the original state.

Around three quarters of the Windebyer Noor is surrounded by a hiking trail, some of which runs on the old railway line of the Eckernförde circular railways from Eckernförde to Owschlag - the complete circuit is possible via Eckernförde roads. Since the hiking trail does not follow the banks of the entire Noor and about a quarter has been left out, swamp forests and reed belts have been preserved in a partially undisturbed location.

The northern part of the hiking trail is also good for cycling - for the southern part it is better to choose a MTB.

The Windebyer Noor has been leased since 1957 by a professional fisherman family business, now in its third generation, which farms the Noor with eel, perch, bream, carp, roach and zander and, since 1990, increasingly with vendace. The company also rents out fishing boats. From the time up to 1929, when there was still a connection with the Baltic Sea, there were herring stocks, but they have been declining lately. At around 15 cm, these herring reach a smaller size than those in the open sea.

A very nice route in the middle of a great lake landscape.
