It is not a heroic act, nor a discovery, nor an act of resistance that is highlighted here, but the charitable and persistent work of a great citizen of Liège. Hortense Montefiore-Bischoffsheim, was the initiator of the construction of an institution in Esneux, for the rehabilitation and recovery of young children. When she died, Hortense Montefiore left part of her fortune to the construction of a modern hospital in the Esneux region. To honor this benefactor, the municipality of Esneux took the initiative and erected this monument. The monument was created by the Liège sculptor Oscar.
