Location: Sint-Truiden, Hasselt, South Limburg, Flanders, Belgium
This beautiful church is located in the Schurhoven district, a stone's throw from the Beguinage. Schurhoven was a medieval residential unit located just outside the city walls, at the Nieuwpoort. The name refers to various barns and courtyards that were built there on fertile soil.Sint-Truiden was on the pilgrimage route from Cologne to Brussels and then on to Saint James in the Spanish Compostella. The church was dedicated to the apostle James, you can find his statue in the church; with pilgrim's punishment, hat and typical shell. The church was already mentioned in 1215. The current classicist church, with a remarkable tower, dates from the second half of the eighteenth century. It contains various beautiful art treasures from the Abbey of Nonnemielen, a Benedictine abbey in the hamlet of Metsteren.Oldest organ in Belgium
Also remarkable is the Ancion organ by the world-famous 17th century organ builder Christian Ancion that you can admire in the church. The organ dates from 1635 and has recently been playable again. It is not the only Ancion organ in Sint-Truiden. You can also find an Ancion organ in the Begijnhof church, which dates from 1654.
The organ in Schurhoven was also worked on by other well-known organ builders over the centuries. The well-known Truiense organ builder, Arnold Clerinx, also worked on the instrument in the 19th century. It only recently became clear which of the two organs was the oldest. In recent years, the musical instrument from Schurhoven has been thoroughly examined and restored.Opening hours
