Mining in the Freiberg area had progressed so far that the ore was mined from deeper layers. Here, however, the existing groundwater was a problem. Up to that time, the groundwater was fed into the Freiberger Mulde via a 120 km long drainage system. In order to penetrate even deeper, new solutions were required for water management. So in 1844 the construction of the Rothschönberger tunnel began. This collected the groundwater from the Freiberg and Brand Erbisdorf mining districts and channeled it via the Triebisch into the Elbe. So that the construction of the adit progressed as quickly as possible, light holes were sunk, allowing the adit to be driven in two directions at the same time. The mined rock was brought to the surface by hydropower and the ditch system of the ditch tour was created in order to provide this impact water for the 4th and 5th light hole of the Rothschönberg tunnel.
