The Zweckel junction was monitored by the mechanical signal box Abzw from 1911 at kilometer 10.93. In addition to the semaphore signals and switches, the Söllerstraße level crossing to the north of the signal box was closed from here. The crossing was used for non-motorized private traffic, the barriers have - otherwise rare - metal curtains to protect against crawling under and are operated by a hand crank. The signal box and the level crossing are listed as architectural monuments in the city of Gladbeck.

The building has two floors, the upper floor with the signal box room can be reached via an external staircase. The floor plan is rectangular, the corners are slanted. The roof is a flat roof and protrudes over the side walls to provide sun protection. The upper part of the outer walls is probably made of timber framing and is clad with natural slate (street side) and artificial slate panels; the lower part is clinker brick. The lever bank was made by Scheidt & Bachmann, the block top and base were made by Siemens. The lever bank had two switch levers, three switch bolts, four signal levers and a free space (formerly switch lever). The levers were connected to the tensioning system on the ground floor via double wire pulls, from where the wires ran to the respective switches and signals.

The signal box became known nationwide from the 1980s onwards. A dispatcher working there initially provided the windows with flower boxes. Over time, the officer and his colleagues decorated the signal box with more plants until it was surrounded by a veritable sea of flowers. Various newspapers described the building as the "most beautiful signal box in Germany". Not much of its former splendour has been preserved since the officers retired. The city of Gladbeck awarded the "flower signal box" an environmental prize and added the building, including the barrier system operated from there, to the city's list of monuments in 2001.

In December 2018, the junction was connected to the Coesfeld ESTW and the Abzw signal box was closed. The barrier system was replaced by a modern system.
