Paper production in the Wolfhagen region began in 1619, when the von der Malsburg family hired the papermaker Matthias Schuerman from Lemgo. He founded a paper mill on the Erpe near Elmarshausen Castle. His sons continued to run it and built up further businesses. His descendants practiced the craft until the 1830s. When machine-made paper from wood became cheaper, the paper mill became unprofitable and was converted into an agricultural business.
