The market fountain was built in 1780 according to plans by the civil engineer Johann Helfrich von Müller. The sculptor Duchert and the stonemason Schipper from Heidelberg carried out the construction. The new market fountain replaced the older fountain from 1546.

The current structure consists of a round basin made of red sandstone. Its parapet is decorated with several fields decorated with rosettes and flower garlands. In the center of the market fountain, an obelisk made of red sandstone decorated with ribbon work sits enthroned on four spheres. The monogram of Louis IX is in the base of the structure in four copies. The fountain was supplied by the water pipe built for its predecessor in 1546. This was lowered in 1808. The market fountain was extensively restored in the 2000s.
