The church is presumably built on the ruins of an ancient Roman amphitheater. Here, the two saints suffered martyrdom in the year 304 under Emperor Diocletian. Vitale was a slave and Agricola his master – both were united in the Christian faith. Particularly worth seeing are the atmospheric 11th-century crypt and the beautiful Renaissance chapel of Santa Maria degli Angeli.
