The Church was built to fulfill the Vow made by the people of Modena to the Madonna della Ghiara, so that she would put an end to the terrible plague of 1630.

The works began in 1634 and were completed around 1640 under the direction of the architect Cristoforo Malagola, known as Galaverna, who took the Bolognese church of San Salvatore as a model. The dome recalls that of the Basilica of the Madonna della Ghiara in Reggio, where the miraculous image of the Virgin is venerated.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Chiesa della Madonna del Voto in Modena the only church of that name in Italy?

No, the name "Chiesa della Madonna del Voto" refers to religious buildings in at least two different Italian cities: Modena and Siena. While both are significant, they have distinct histories and features. The one in Modena is a standalone Baroque church, whereas the Cappella della Madonna del Voto in Siena is a chapel located inside the Siena Cathedral.

What is the historical significance of the Chiesa della Madonna del Voto in Modena?

The church holds profound historical significance as it was built as a votive offering following the devastating plague of 1630. The people of Modena made a vow to the Madonna della Ghiara to end the plague, and its construction, which began in 1634 and was completed around 1640, fulfilled that promise. It stands as a testament to the city's faith and resilience during a challenging period.

What are some of the most notable artworks to see inside the church?

The interior is rich with Baroque art. Of particular note is Ludovico Lana's "Pala Della Peste", which vividly narrates the events leading to the church's construction, depicting the Madonna Della Ghiara with Modena's protectors, Saints Geminianus and Omobono, alongside Saints Roch and Sebastian. Additionally, two compelling paintings by Francesco Stringa, depicting the Transit of the Virgin and the Death of Saint Joseph, are highly regarded.

Are there any specific architectural details that make the Chiesa della Madonna del Voto unique?

Yes, the church is a prime example of Baroque architectural style. It features a sophisticated dome that recalls the Basilica of the Madonna della Ghiara in Reggio Emilia. The design, attributed to Cristoforo Malagola (il Galaverna), was modeled after the San Salvatore church in Bologna, and its single nave in a Mannerist style contributes to its unique aesthetic.

What are the typical opening hours for visitors?

The Chiesa della Madonna del Voto is generally open to the public on Saturday and Sunday afternoons, typically from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM. It's advisable to plan your visit within these hours to ensure access to the interior and its artworks.

Is the Chiesa della Madonna del Voto suitable for families with children?

You can enjoy scenic walks through Modena's historic center, discovering various piazzas, historical buildings, and charming streets. These urban strolls offer a different kind of scenic experience, rich in culture and local life.

Is the area around the Chiesa della Madonna del Voto accessible for individuals with mobility challenges?

However, as an older historical building, specific accessibility features within the church itself (like ramps or elevators) may be limited. It's recommended to contact the church directly for the most up-to-date information regarding accessibility for individuals with mobility challenges.
