It was built as a hall church after the great fire of 1768 by the royal church architect Johann Gottfried Rosenberg from Schleswig in classically simple late baroque forms.
The "curved tower helmet", the so-called "Welsche Haube" became the landmark of Hohenwestedt.
The sandstone portal was designed by the Eutin court sculptor Joh. Georg Moser and the cartouche above the portal shows the crowned monogram of the Danish King Christian VII, during whose reign the building was built (1749–1808).
