Guarda "Guarda - a village for all the senses"
The most beautiful end of the world? You can find it in Guarda. The Lower Engadine village, which became famous because of the story of Schellen-Ursli, is one of the most beautiful places in Graubünden. We went on a discovery tour in winter and experienced Guarda with all five senses.
Guarda is a feast for the eyes. It was not by chance that it was voted one of the ten most beautiful mountain villages in Graubünden and was awarded the Wakker Prize for the best-preserved village in 1975. Anyone strolling through Guarda loses track of time, even though the small town could be crossed quickly. But you can't get enough of the picturesque Engadine houses with their paintings and sgraffito and the view of the Lower Engadine Dolomites.
The buildings mostly date from the 16th and 17th centuries. This is unique in the valley because, unlike other villages in the Lower Engadine, Guarda was spared major village fires. The church with its pretty tower is even more original. It has survived both wars and the Habsburg raids and destruction. What is striking is that the houses in the village center are all facing the street. This is surprising, given the sunny hillside location, but it has to do with the fact that Guarda was a street village 500 years ago and the main traffic axis ran through the small town. Today, Guarda is traffic-free. If you arrive by car, leave your vehicle in the car park at the entrance to the town. It is even better to arrive in a relaxed manner using public transport.

High above the Inn, far away from the valley road and the railway line, lies Guarda, shining as brightly as the sun. It fascinates and captivates visitors like an open treasure chest: Selina Chönz and Alois Carigiet were inspired by the village of 200 souls back in 1945 and created the story of Schellen-Ursli here.

In 1975, Guarda received the Wakker Prize for its intact village image. And for decades, city refugees with grandiose ideas have been heading here - out of fascination for the model village of Romanesque culture and tradition. With a great sense of authenticity and passionate craftsmanship, the residents make the fascination come alive for all the senses.

A place that seems like a local museum, but is not commercialized.
