    Engadine houses
The Engadin houses with their mighty stone walls and funnel-shaped windows impress at first sight because of their proud architecture. But its soul lies in the artistic decorations, the sgraffiti.

      Engadine houses
Massive walls, deep rows of windows and the arched gate are typical features of an Engadin house. But what makes each of these buildings unique is the sgraffito on the plastered facades. The word is derived from the Italian sgraffiare (to scratch) and describes the technique of the traditional craft that migrant workers brought to the Upper Engadine as early as the 16th century.
The slogans, patterns and drawings are scratched into the damp plaster and do not have an effect through color but through a sophisticated play of light and shadow. It is not uncommon for them to reveal something about the residents of the house. On a guided tour of the village, visitors learn these stories; in some places they can even try the art for themselves. Incidentally, the ornaments are particularly beautiful on the facades of Guarda, which received the Wakker Prize for its splendor in 1975.
