Versilia is a coastal strip with sandy beaches that slopes gradually down to the sea from the Apuan Alps. Since the nineteenth century, various fashionable seaside resorts have emerged in the coastal area. Over the years, these have grown together into a large agglomeration. There are few high-rise buildings in the coastal area; the buildings generally do not rise above the pine forests (pineta).
