Top cycling routes to Kreuzberg Church and Holy Stairs

Tips

  • People climbed the hill as early as the 15th century to worship a crucifix standing there. The view that opens up from Bonn's Kreuzberg is not to be scoffed at either. The church itself, including the three-part staircase, is considered the most important baroque sacred building in Bonn and the surrounding area. The complex with its 28 steps is a replica of the "Scala Santa" in Rome, was created by the Baroque master builder Balthasar Neumann and is divided into three flights of stairs. The middle, actual Scala Sancta, is reserved for the worshipers, who are only allowed to approach the cross kneeling and "without weapons".

  • Splendid baroque chapel with holy staircase after the model in the Lateran palace in Rome. Built by Elector Clemens August. Nestled in beautiful countryside with good views over Bonn.
