April 13, 1759: On this gruesome day, the Battle of Bergen and Vilbel took place on the Berger Wiesen and the Vilbel Forest as part of the Seven Years' War (1756-1763). The British fought against the French for the strategically important Free Imperial City of Frankfurt.

The French had succeeded in taking the city in January and the British, as allies of Prussia, now tried to conquer the city with an allied army. 22,000 Allied soldiers faced the 30,000 French soldiers.

After bitter fighting, the French emerged victorious. This day went down in history as "Bloody Good Friday": Around 6,000 people lost their lives in this battle, some of them very cruelly.

Vilbel was lucky in its misfortune: its local area was largely spared from the fighting. The thunder of the cannons during the battle was supposedly so loud that it could be heard from the Berger Höhe as far away as Friedberg, Hanau and Gelnhausen, 30 kilometers away as the crow flies!
