In 1885, the Imperial Postal Administration acquired the almost 3200 square meter site and built its headquarters there. The reason for the construction was a lack of space in the Imperial Post's previous headquarters, where by the beginning of 1880 the premises had become too small for the rapidly growing authority. It took four years for the building to be constructed in all its glory and it still dominates the cityscape of Konstanz today.
