Hiking

The commission to erect a memorial in honor of Philipp Melanchthons took place in 1858. The foundation stone of the memorial was laid in 1860 and in 1865 it was inaugurated. The design comes from Friedrich Drake and that of the baldachin from Johann Heinrich Strack based on the design of Schinkel. Melanchthon's image stands in the marketplace in an ankle-length outer garment without a headgear. In his right hand he holds the scroll of the Augsburg Confession of Faith. After various repairs in 1948 and 1967, both canopies were faithfully restored from 2010 to 2013.
