Of all the ancient carved stones that are liberally scattered across Ilkley Moor, the Swastika Stone is the most famous. The theory goes that the Swastika-esque patterns in the rock were carved by occupying troops during the Roman era. Although the pattern is unique to Britain, similar designs have been discovered in Italy, lending weight to the hypothesis that the visiting troops imitated the designed they had seen closer to home.
