Court Church of the Würzburg Residence
Despite its small size, the Court Church, consecrated in 1743, is one of the most perfect religious buildings of the 18th century in Germany due to its sophisticated spatial structure and the high artistic quality of its decoration.
The architect Balthasar Neumann succeeded in creating a completely surprising room consisting exclusively of curved walls with three oval vaulted domes behind the four-storey palace façade in the southwest corner of the residence, which was retained on the outside. The magnificent decoration, carried out between 1735 and 1743, is partly based on designs by his rival Lucas von Hildebrandt.
The furnishings were mostly created by Würzburg court artists: Rudolph Byss and his students created the ceiling frescoes (renewed after war damage), Antonio Bossi the stucco work and stucco figures, Johann Wolfgang van der Auwera the marble sculptures of Saints Kilian and Burkard to the side of the high altar. The two side altar paintings stand out even more among the already high-quality furnishings. They depict the "Fall of the Angels" and the "Assumption of Mary" and are works by Giovanni Battista Tiepolo from 1752.

The Würzburg Court Church, part of the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Residence, is a Baroque total work of art which, in its exuberant splendor, initially 'kills' the viewer at first glance and only gradually reveals itself to the many artistic details.

After Prince Bishop Johann Philipp Franz von Schönborn was persuaded by Balthasar Neumann to set up the court church in the south-west corner wing of the residence, the planning entered a decisive phase. Neumann, who was entrusted with the project, had the problem of preserving the uniform external appearance of the residence and taking into account the division of the facade with its windows and floors. The windowless left side of the church room was provided with mirrors, which reflect the light like windows.
