James Ensor (1860-1949), painter of symbolism, is generally recognized as the most important innovator of modern art in Belgium, a deviant individualist who did not easily allow himself to be categorized within a particular art movement. He was also a composer and writer.
Ensor died on Saturday, November 19, 1949 at 7:58 a.m. in the Sacred Heart Clinic in Ostend. The baron was given an almost princely funeral with a funeral procession that went from the City Hall (where the Master was laid out) along the Vindictivelaan and the Kapellestraat to the Sint-Petrus- en -Pauluskerk, led by mayor Henri Serruys. After the mass, the Master was driven to his final resting place, here, at his beloved Duinenkerkje in Mariakerke. Dignitaries and many ordinary people said goodbye at the coffin. James Ensor had successfully campaigned for the preservation of the dunes and the church in Mariakerke and had therefore chosen this site as his final resting place.
