Since 1683, the city of Königsberg belonged to the Duchy of Saxony and continued to be a Protestant enclave in the largely Catholic region of Lower Franconia. Following a referendum, Königsberg, along with the Free State of Coburg, became part of Bavaria in 1920.
So that's why this sign is here. It almost says so, too.
