The medieval moated castle, built in the 13th century, initially served as the seat of the knights of Oumünde (Aumund, today a district in the north of Bremen), but was sold to the Bremen council in the 15th century, which leased the castle (today's name: "Hus" or Haus Blomendal) to deserving mayors or councilors of the city.
