In the nineteenth century, the postal service came into state hands. The Postal Act of 1850 organised and regulated the rapidly growing postal traffic, including the provision that every municipality had to have a post office. At the same time, distance and time in the transmission of messages suddenly lost their significance when the electric telegraph began its advance. Initially, it was mainly used by railway companies, but here too the state monopoly soon made its entrance.

The post and telegraph offices radiated solidity and a certain nobility, as if to emphasise that this was an important matter. No wonder that dozens of post offices now have the status of national monument, eighteen in Brabant alone. In the meantime, they have all been given a new purpose. The former post and telegraph office in Roosendaal houses the Chinese restaurant ‘De Postkoets’. When choosing that name, they apparently lost sight of the fact that Roosendaal was just about the first place in Brabant where not the stagecoach but the train was used for postal traffic.

This post office, built in 1897 by order of the National Buildings Agency, was in use as such until 1972. The building is seen as a representative example of a post office in the style of national architect C.H. Peters, and has a mixture of neo-Gothic and neo-Renaissance motifs. The striking letterbox, although no longer in use, in the front facade is a reminder of its former function. The entrance with the revolving door that gave access to the public area of the post office has also not changed. Furthermore, the interior has been adapted to the requirements that the new purpose as a restaurant entailed. On the side of the windows, one can still find a single detail from the time in which the building was built.
