Mariagaard looks a bit like a beguinage, but it isn't. The long history began on 29 August 1617. That's when Lady Joanna de Wasservas founded a house of God for four old poor 'women of good deegelycke Catholycke parents'.

The current chapel was consecrated by Bishop Hopmans on 12 February 1937. The courtyard originally consisted of nine houses, a chapel, a gatehouse and an inner courtyard.

And all of that was designed by architect Van Hees and built for unmarried, older women who worked for the pastor or for the Catholic church and who did not receive a pension.

In 2008, this Roosendaal gem on the national monument list was officially reopened by Aramis AlleeWonen

The housing association had the inner garden renovated and the houses thoroughly renovated, but maintained the authentic appearance.

Hofje Mariagaard was founded in 1617. Compared to the sober traditional construction of the former almshouse on Kerkstraat, this residential courtyard, which was built for the Wasservasstichting at the time, makes a spacious and almost stately impression, although architect A. van Hees did not lose himself in exuberance with his design in the style of the Delft School. Architect J. Elst provided the chapel with a new porch in 1968. The current layout of the inner garden is of a more recent date. The current buildings date from the 1930s.
