The Dom, or Cathedral of St. John the Baptist, stands on Cathedral Island, which used to be under the administration of the Bishop of Wrocław rather than the city. The construction of the Gothic cathedral started in the 1340s. On Easter Monday 1945, 70 percent of the church was destroyed. The reconstruction, which the Polish people of Wroclaw began immediately after the war, was only completed in 1991 when the two pointed helmets were placed on the church towers
