The former Electorate of Cologne customs fortress of Zons, founded by Archbishop Friedrich III of Saarwerden in the 14th century, is considered a unique example of a fortified medieval town in the Rhineland due to its excellent state of preservation. The mighty Rhine Tower from 1388 is particularly worth seeing. But the Judde Tower with its baroque dome and the windmill with its original wooden mill from the 17th century are also popular photo subjects, along with the Rhine pier and the city walls. True to its historical significance, the "Rhenish Rothenburg" today plays an important role in the cultural life of the Rhine district of Neuss.
