The Beguinage Church of Sint-Truiden is one of the most important medieval beguinage churches in Flanders. The choir dates from the 13th century, the nave from the 16th century. The church is best known for its 38 magnificent murals from the 13th to the 17th century.

The construction of this church was started almost immediately after Abbot Willem van Rijkel made the site available to the beguinage community in 1258. The church, which was restored in 1975-1980 under the direction of P. Van Mechelen, is the result of various construction phases: the west facade and four bays are late Romanesque, the choir is early 14th century, the central section dates from the 15th century.

The exterior is very sober. Various materials are used: quartzite, brick, Maastricht stone and Gobertange stone. The paradise gate in the side wall has a sculpted tympanum that represents the Lamb of God. At the height of the choir entrance there is a crossing tower.

The interior is covered with an oak barrel vault from 1507 that was painted with coats of arms and lilies in the 19th century. Tombstones from various periods have been laid in the floor. Walls and pillars were painted with 38 scenes in four periods, between 1300 and 1600. All wall paintings were applied to a dry layer of plaster.

After its restoration, the church was given a museum function. For this purpose, it was almost completely cleared. However, the baroque pulpit (1672), the high altar, the tribune (1644-1646) with an Ancion organ and several side altars have remained. The 17th century organ of the Beguinage Church, attributed to Christian Ancion from Huy, is the oldest homogeneously preserved and playable organ in the country (1644-1646).

The Beguinage Church is a unique piece of world heritage and currently functions as a museum.

The Beguinage Church was protected as a monument from 1933 and was completely restored. This late Romanesque, partly early Gothic church is best known for its cycle of 38 murals from the beginning of the 14th century to the end of the 16th century. Due to their monumental execution and distribution over the entire interior, these murals form one of the most impressive ensembles in the country.

The 17th-century organ of the Beguinage Church, attributed to Christian Ancion from Huy, is the oldest homogeneously preserved and playable organ in the country (1644-1646).

You can also attend a number of concerts or an exhibition in the Beguinage Church every year.

The Beguinage Church is closed from 1 November to 31 March. The church is open to visitors from 1 April.

Admission is free, except for exhibitions or concerts.
