St. Peter's Church

The Sint-Pieterskerk is the parish church of Nieuwerkerken, located at Kerkstraat 96.

The tower of this brick church comes from the predecessor, a neoclassical building from 1828. This square west tower has two sections, is covered with a constricted needle spire, and has a statue of Saint Peter above the entrance portal.

The current church building is in neo-Romanesque style and dates from 1910. The church was enlarged from 1949-1950 with two side aisles.

The church holds a polychrome wooden statue of Saint Anthony Abbot (late 16th century), and an 18th century terracotta bust of Saint Peter. The tub of the pulpit is from the 17th century and the communion rail from the second half of the 18th century. The Stations of the Cross were painted by Théodore Schaepkens. The stained glass windows represent a number of lords of the Nieuwerkerken Castle.
