Trench for transporting building materials in the 17th century
April 7, 2019
The Durlacher Karlsburg was destroyed in 1689 in the Palatinate War of Succession. For the reconstruction of the castle and Durlach itself building materials were needed. For this purpose, this raft ditch was created in 1699. He served to transport stones from the local quarries.
From 1715, stones were also needed for the newly founded residence city of Karlsruhe. The Raft Trench created a navigable connection over the Landgraben Karlsruhe past the Schloss Gottesaue. There is a billboard on the spot (Plate 9/39 - historical tour of Grötzingen).
