Durlach's Karlsburg Castle was destroyed in 1689 during the War of the Palatine Succession. Building materials were needed for the reconstruction of the castle and Durlach itself. This log flume was constructed in 1699 for this purpose. It served to transport stones from the local quarries.

From 1715 onwards, stones were also needed for the newly founded residential city of Karlsruhe. The log flume created a navigable connection via the Karlsruhe Landgraben (a drainage ditch) past Gottesaue Palace.
