The Spittelau waste incineration plant in Vienna is world-famous primarily because of its artistic design by Friedensreich Hundertwasser. After the originally austere industrial facility was damaged by fire in 1987, Hundertwasser was commissioned to give it a new exterior. Although he was generally critical of waste incineration plants, he agreed to collaborate on the project, provided that state-of-the-art environmental and filtration technology was used. For Hundertwasser, the project was less a glorification of technology than a warning against environmental destruction and waste.
