The cave is a historic escape cave.
During the siege of Vienna in 1529, Janissary troops, marauding volunteers, who plundered in a wide area, also visited Schwarzau, it is known that the inhabitants had taken refuge in the surrounding forests. The place and church were burned, but the invasion did not demand sacrifices.
Archaeological excavations in the cave have confirmed that the manor hole was used during this period. It may have been a more elaborate defense posture, along with the nearby Piper Hole, and the wives and children will probably have been placed further up in the women's hole.
