The hut
The Dürrensteinhütte (2,040 m) is located in the Braies Dolomites mountain range in South Tyrol, on the Plätzwiese plateau.

The plateau in the Fanes-Sennes-Braies Nature Park is surrounded by the Hohe Gaisl, Tre Cime, Tofana and Monte Cristallo mountain groups. The plateau can be reached by car from Braies (to the north) and Schluderbach (to the south), so the hut is easily accessible in a few minutes on foot (approx. 35 minutes) and also with strollers.

Right next to the hut are the impressive ruins of an Austro-Hungarian fort called Werk Plätzwiese.

The hut, a stopover on the Alta Via delle Dolomiti and the starting point of the Alta Via per Rossalpe, attracts hikers, mountaineers, climbers and, last but not least, in the warmer months, mountain bikers, who have direct access to breathtaking tours such as the legendary Dolomites circuit, the challenging Stoneman Trail or the Dolomiti -Find superbike route.

Even in winter, the Plätzwiese and the Dürrensteinhütte are popular excursion destinations for cross-country skiers, tobogganers and ski mountaineers who are drawn to the Dürrenstein. The hike to the return cross on the Strudelkopf (2,307 m) is particularly interesting: the summit cross can be reached in just 20 minutes and the view of peaks such as the Tre Cime is overwhelming.
