The eagle or bird, known as "Ales", is one of the Seven Wonders of Nordhausen. The original, made of wood, is in the Flohburg City Museum, and a replica stands on the fountain in the market square.
As part of the 2004 State Garden Show, the eagle fountain, which is around 2.20 meters in diameter and made of natural stone, was erected on the town hall square. The architect of the fountain was Gerd Mackensen from Nordhausen. The eagle was placed on the edge of the fountain and was presented as a gift to the city of Nordhausen by the architectural studio Dr. Worchede and Partner from Erfurt as part of the 2004 State Garden Show. Critics complained that the original symbolic meaning was being distorted. Instead, they advocated erecting a replica at the historic location in the Neustadt to commemorate the district association and preserve the memory of the eagle. (Source: Nordhausen-Wiki)
