The Schwedenschanze is a Celtic ring wall, the boundary wall of which can still be seen very well at one point. In ancient times, the Celtic settlements were connected to one another via high-altitude trails, for example in the Spessart through the Birkenhainer Weg and probably also through the Eselsweg. Ring wall settlements were usually built on exposed peaks or ridge locations, so that on the one hand valleys or valley entrances could be overlooked and controlled and on the other hand there was access to extensive mountain trails.
