The memorial commemorates the evacuation march from the Dachau concentration camp through the Würm Valley in April 1945. The sculpture was created by Prof. Hubertus von Pilgrim. It was built in 1989 on the initiative of former mayor Dr. Ekkehard Knobloch in front of the entrance to the forest cemetery in Gauting. A series of monuments of the same route marks the route from Dachau via Munich to Waakirchen.
