The university was founded on March 22, 1911 through the merger of the Porto Polytechnic Academy (Academia Politécnica de Porto) and the Porto Surgical School (Escola Médico-Cirúrgica de Porto) in the same year as the University of Lisbon. The first faculties of the University of Porto were the Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Natural Sciences and the Faculty of Medicine.
