Best Hikes to Leitenweg Panorama and Pillnitz Vineyards

Tips

  • From here you have a very nice view over the vineyards. Especially in the evening sun, you can rest on a bench after a hike and let your gaze wander over the landscape and if you want, you can take part in a wine tasting in the local vineyard.

  • From the Leitenweg, which runs above the vineyards, you have a wonderful panorama over the royal vineyard of Pillnitz. The guard houses on the Weinbergweg served as accommodation for the vineyard guards. Two of the former four guard houses from the 18th century are still there and are now used as a base by amateur winemakers.

In the middle of the vineyard is the vineyard church "Zum Heiligen Geist", consecrated in 1725. In 1723, August the Strong had the old castle church in the Pillnitz Castle Park removed because the sandstone was needed to build the vineyard church. The altar and baptismal font were taken from the Schlossparkkirche. Master builder was Matthäus Pöppelmann, who also designed and erected other buildings in Dresden. Access is only possible from the valley side. The Saxon-Polish coat of arms above the door is worth seeing.
