The excursion trail leads along the shore of the moor lake and always gives new insights into the eerily beautiful moor landscape.

The Ribnitzer Great Moor combines different types - from the fen to the moor and all associated transitional forms - due to the high salinity and the extent to the Baltic meet in this bog continental and maritime flora.

The mooring took place about eleven to twelve thousand years ago. For centuries, extensive Abtorfungen occurred. The 273.88 ha of bog area were put under protection in 1939. In 1934 and 1947 parts of the moor burned out. Until 1950, the machine was dismantled in the center and in the Neuhaus part. For this purpose, the moor was drained. From 1975, the city forester Staue on the edge built with the aim to achieve an improvement in hydrological conditions. At present, two-thirds of the reserve's area is wooded with pines and birches. This proportion is set to decline in the coming years, with decoiling only being effective if the water level is raised at the same time.

In the years 1996 to 1998 was another extensive renaturation program. Due to the greatly reduced water level, there was a peat decomposition, which releases large amounts of carbon dioxide and nitrogen compounds. The work began with hydrological and hydrogeological surveys and vegetation mapping. For this, the two scientists Michael Giersberg and Axel Precker were won.

The renaturation is a successful joint project of the city of Ribnitz-Damgarten with the support of the Ministry of Agriculture and Nature Conservation Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and the foundation "Prince Nature Support" Hamburg. The annual monitoring shows significant improvements.

The Ribnitz Great Moor is a rain-fed bog, meaning it is fed solely by precipitation, which is "held" by the moss. The moss grows as a result, bulges up, forms peat, and grows... if it isn't drained. Here, too, peat was dug and the bog drained. Today, a worthwhile excursion trail leads through it, with information boards and benches.
