In 1903, the then independent city of Mülheim planned a large power plant due to the increasing demand for electrical energy. In 1904–1905, the Frankfurt company Elektrizitäts-AG formerly W. Lahmeyer & Co. was built. The power plant was to supply light and power for the city.
