At the Chempark is one of the most beautiful places in Leverkusen: the Japanese Garden. The expansive grounds are not only a popular meeting place for many Bayer employees during their lunch break; strollers and families are also regularly enchanted by the charming Far Eastern flair.

To capture the Japanese atmosphere in Leverkusen, you don't have to travel far. A detour to the Japanese Garden is enough, and visitors find themselves in a spectacular park landscape, offering 15,000 square meters of blooming treasures from many parts of East Asia, as well as enchanting sculptures, ornate lanterns, and curved gateways. The Japanese Garden was created in 1912. At the initiative of Carl Duisberg, then General Director of the Farbenfabrik Friedrich Bayer & Co., a garden landscape was developed under professional guidance, and has been open to the general public since the 1950s. Today, the Japanese Garden attracts many Chempark employees who regularly spend their lunch breaks here.

But the Japanese Garden is also a permanent fixture and popular destination for families and strollers on weekends; wedding couples regularly have their "most beautiful moment" of their lives photographed here. The most appealing feature of the Japanese Garden is the play of colors in the flora, which is in season almost all year round. This is ensured by the diverse plants, consisting of a combination of native and exotic plants. In addition to grasses, papyrus shrubs, Japanese golden maples, chrysanthemums, and many more, there are also giant sequoias to marvel at in the Japanese Garden. There are also small ponds with Japanese koi and turtles on the grounds.

Other highlights include the Mikado Bridge, modeled after a bridge in the temple city of Nikko, and the teahouse, which, with its Buddha statues, geishas, and water-spouting dragons, is one of the attractions of the Japanese Garden.

The landscape, which was voted among the top 10 in the "Germany's Most Beautiful Park" competition in 2006, is open daily from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. during the warmer months from May to September and is free to visitors.
