The Crimean Karaites, a people speaking a Turkic languages, settled in Trakai in the end of the 14th century (1397-1398). The name of the people is derived from the Karaite faith which is based on the Old Testament and has Islamic elements. Most modern scientist regard them as descendants of the Karaite Jews (a sect which rejects the Talmud) who settled in the Crimea and adopted a Kypchak language with some local Kypchak converts. The Crimean Karaites like their Israeli Karaites belong to the Jewish faith but because of a historical technicality of Zarist Russia, they were considered as "Russian" by the Nazi and therefore exempt from the Holocaust. The museum is located in the 1894 built Kenessa (meaning temple in the Karaites language): it was done up in 1903-04 and has not change visually since then. The locally famous pastry "Kibinai" is a Karaite dish.

A worthwhile museum about this small, special ethnic group. Next door is the Kenessa, the Karaite prayer house.
