Saint John the Baptist, to whom the church "St. Johann Baptist" in Nideggen is dedicated, is - like Saint Joseph - a man on the threshold between the Old and the New Testament. The Catholic parish church of St. Johannes Baptist is located in Nideggen in the Düren district in the northern Eifel. It is located directly on the access road to Nideggen Castle, at the confluence with a wooded area.
The church was built between 1177 and 1219 after several plan changes and from then on belonged to the Teutonic Order. The altar was consecrated between 1180 and 1192. At the end of 1282 it was given to the local Order of St. John by the Counts of Jülich. In the following years it served as a burial church for the noble family of the Counts of Jülich. Between 1898 and 1900 the building was renovated under the direction of the Strasbourg cathedral builder Ludwig Arntz. After severe destruction in the Second World War, St. Johannes Baptist was rebuilt in historical form by 1957, the project was led by the local architect Heinrich Lauer.
