Lyndenstein was built in 1821 for the grietman (mayor) of Opsterland, Frans Godard van Lynden, according to a design by Abraham Bruinsma, an architect in Leeuwarden. Huize Lyndenstein owes its existence to Mistress Cornelia Johanna Maria van Lynden. She showed concern for the fate of the less fortunate in Beetsterzwaag and the surrounding area. In 1880 she died at the age of twenty from tuberculosis, which she had contracted through her visits to the sick. In memory of Miss Cornelia, the Lyndensteyn house and its belongings were transferred to the Cornelia Foundation in 1905, whose first objective was: To take in sickly, disabled or needy minor children free of charge.
