On August 5, 1914, German soldiers have just invaded Belgium. They are tense, the weather is oppressively hot, and they fear the firepower of the forts protecting the city of Liège. When they see the vicar Rensonnet and the parish secretary Pondcuir coming out of the church, they are convinced that they have communicated with the Fort of Fléron by climbing the bell tower. The two civilians are arrested and shot on the spot, just outside the village. The next day, the veterinarian Crahay and the farmers Chaineux and Nizet are also shot in La Falise. Ten years later, in 1924, Father Fossoul decided to erect this cross to honor the five civilians, victims of arbitrary violence, as well as four fallen soldiers.

Today, this monument is still regularly used as a permanent processional altar on the feast of Saint Sebastian.

The stone base of the cross bears the inscription "THE BLOOD OF THE RIGHTEOUS SAVED THE WORLD".

This cross, whose bright and strong body stands out clearly and which the hiker encounters here a little way out, is not a simple wayside cross, but a memorial cross (Bernd has described the reason for its erection in detail) with a message that is still relevant today: reminding people to preserve peace is a task for all generations.
