Villa Basilica - another disappeared villa - was a beautiful nineteenth-century noble residence, which was purchased in 1928 by a textile industrialist in love with Livorno, Giuseppe Valaperti from Prato; he made it his favorite residence and donated to the city, in addition to two valuable fountains, a large part of his property to build a modern stadium which took the name of Edda Ciano and is today named after Armando Picchi from Livorno, the unforgettable footballer of the National. Valaperti then, with his trusted designer, Fosco Cioni, built all those characteristic villas in eclectic style which are found on the seafront in front of the Accademia between Barriera Margherita and the Hippodrome, as well as the so-called Baracchina Rossa, an iconic place of Ardenza and central point of the Livorno nightlife on summer evenings.

The villa, which was located along today's Via Enrico Toti, halfway between the seafront and the stadium, was surrounded by a large wooded park shaded by thick tall trees and with two well-kept gardens, one on the front and one on the back; it consisted of a three-storey building with an octagonal structure prominence on the facade and characterized by a portico on the ground floor and a series of windows at the top; it was equipped with elegant halls and a large entrance on the ground floor which led to the first floor via a bright double staircase.

The abandonment after the war and the widespread degradation of the structure were too serious for any private individual who wanted to carry out the restoration. Not even the public administrators showed interest, also because the city, badly hit by the war, had other priorities. Much more interested was the building speculation, which, having taken over the entire property, in the 1960s had the villa definitively demolished by building a series of large condominiums on that land.

Today only a majestic green gate remains of Villa Basilica, which incorporates two beautiful wrought iron and glass lampposts and is delimited between two rectangular pillars crowned at the top by two vases.
