Originally the church belonged to the monastery of S. Caterina (14th century) which was initially built by the Humiliati, subsequently inhabited by the Benedictine nuns (1616) and finally closed in 1848. One of the cloister's wings once housed the Ristorante Venezia and was demolished in 1974, but traces of the monastery's structure are still visible in the courtyard behind the building. In 1849 the place was aquired by the Confraternity of the Beata Vergine Immacolata which refurbished it in the late neoclassical style, decorating it with elements from the ancient church of the Immacolata al Sole which was demolished in 1843 to make way for the Palazzo Civico. The granite facade is by Bernardo Ramelli (1917).
