The first documented mention of the complex dates back to 969 when the ecclesia in honore was called Beatae Virgins Mariae constructa. According to the description of a pastoral visit, in 1584 the church must have assumed the structure that can still be seen today. In 1606, after the roof collapsed, it was rebuilt, as were the roof, apse and main altar. It was in that century that the building lost traces of its medieval layout. The architect was commissioned in the mid-18th century. Massari for a reorganization of the interior.

The cathedral has three naves with stone columns. At the main altar are two angels by Giuseppe Bernardi; the baptismal font from 1491 bears the coat of arms of Queen Cornaro, who dedicated it to the architect. Francesco Graziolo. There are then two important altarpieces by Lorenzo Lotto and Jacopo Da Ponte. The exterior facade is the result of an intervention completed in 1889 based on a project by Pietro Saccardo, who placed the visible facade next to the old facade.
