During the First World War, Colle di San Martino was part of the Italian defense line that ran along the entire ridge of the Colli Asolani: trenches, depots, and cave shelters, observation posts, and artillery positions. Colle San Martino was such an important observation point that King Vittorio Emanuele III visited it several times, between 1917 and 1918, to view the disposition of his troops and the movements of the front on the Piave and Grappa: since then it has also been called the 'King's Observatory'.
