Hiking

Dokkum attracted many German traders and workers/craftsmen, especially in textiles. These were predominantly Catholic. This group came mainly from the south of Emsland (around Osnabrück). Mettingen is one of those places.
An exception to this were the weavers from the then County of Bentheim. They were (German) Protestant. This group could go to their church in Leeuwarden, but many joined the Dutch Protestant Church (now the Reformed Church). Just after 1800, many Bentheimers fled to the Netherlands.
