In the 17th century, pirates made the coasts of Friesland unsafe, Dunkirk privateers. On April 2, 1630, Dokkum captains captured a pirate ship on the Wadden Sea. The captain managed to escape with a few companions, but the others were taken captive to the city. They came from (of all places) Workum, Bruges, Norway, Denmark and an Englishman, named Franciscus. He was 23 years old. They were sentenced to the gallows. Franciscus' wife came over from England to plead for him, but in vain. The pirate cook came from the German Wadden Island of Norderney, and was only flogged. The gallows stood at the Halvemaanspoort and the others were hanged there. Artist Frank van Dijk was allowed to put up a modern type of gallows in memory of it. There is a crow on top.
